सृष्टि की रचना बहुत समय पहले की बात है- महा-प्रलय से सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि का नाश हो गया था। विष्णु भगवान आदिशेष पर विश्राम कर रहे थे। आदिशक्ति देवी ने उन्हें जगाकर कहा, “प्रभु, आँखें खोलिए! सृष्टि की रचना का समय आ गया है...” विष्णु भगवान ने धीरे से अपनी आँखें खोलकर अपनी नाभि की ओर देखा। वहाँ स्वयंभू ब्रह्मा कमल पुष्प पर बैठे थे। वे हाथ जोड़े हुए विष्णु को ही निहार रहे थे। विष्णु भगवान ने कहा, “ब्रह्मा, कमल से आप सृष्टि की रचना करिए, जो शाश्वत हो... उसका विलय तब तक न हो जब तक मैं स्वयं ही विलय न करूँ..." ब्रह्मा ने तुरंत कमल के तीन भाग किए और स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी और आकाश का निर्माण किया। फिर धरती को उन्होंने प्राकृतिक वनस्पतियों और जीवों से परिपूर्ण कर दिया। इस रचना को देख विष्णु ने कहा, "ब्रह्मा, यह तो सुंदर है पर इन सबका ख्याल कौन रखेगा तथा कौन इन्हें भोगेगा?" कुछ सोचते हुए ब्रह्मा ने कहा, “हूँऽऽऽ... अर्थात् मुझे स्वयं से प्राणियों की रचना करनी होगी...।" ब्रह्मा ने अपने शरीर के दो भागों में से एक से पुरूष और दूसरे से नारी की रचना की।

आत्मा ईश्वर ने पंचभूत देवों (पृथ्वी, जल, अग्नि, गगन और वायु) की रचना की। देवताओं ने उनसे अनुरोध किया, “हम चाहते हैं कि कोई हमें अन्न और जल उपलब्ध करवाए, हमारा पोषण करे..." यह सुनकर ईश्वर ने पंचभूतों से मानव की रचना की और देवताओं को उसमें प्रवेश करने के लिए कहा। सर्वप्रथम उन्होंने अग्नि से प्रवेश करने के लिए कहा। अग्नि देव मनुष्य के मुख में वाणी बने, वायु देव नासिका से प्रवेश कर जीवनदायिनी श्वास बने, सूर्यदेव ने चक्षु बन दृष्टि प्रदान की। चारों दिशाओं ने कान से प्रवेश किया और श्रवण शक्ति दी। पृथ्वी की दिव्य जड़ी-बूटियाँ शरीर के चर्म भाग पर रोम के रूप में समा गईं। अंत में 'मन' मनुष्य मस्तिष्क में विचार रूप में स्थापित हुआ। इस प्रकार ईश्वर ने सभी देवों को मनुष्य के भीतर ज्ञानेन्द्रिय रूप में स्थापित कर दिया। अपनी पहचान बनाने के लिए उन्होंने मनुष्य के सिर के ऊपरी भाग में एक ‘ब्रह्मरंध्र' बनाया। वहीं से आत्मा मनुष्य के शरीर में प्रवेश करती है। आत्मा अविनाशी है, इस पर किसी भी प्राकृतिक भाव का असर नहीं होता। इसका एक ही स्वाभाविक गुण है- स्वाभाविक रूप से प्रसार करना और ईश्वर में विलीन होना। जब तक आत्मा ईश्वर के अपने मुख्य बिन्दु तक नहीं पहुँचती, तब तक शरीर बदलता रहता है।

वेद वेदों में ऋषियों द्वारा दृष्ट मंत्रों का संकलन है। यह बहुत विशाल है। कुछ मंत्र छन्दोबद्ध तथा कुछ गद्यात्मक हैं। छन्दोबद्ध मंत्रों को 'ऋक्' कहा जाता है। ‘ऋक्’ को ऋचा भी कहते हैं। इन्हीं के द्वारा देवताओं की अर्चना की जाती है। वेद चार हैं- ऋग्वेद, यजुर्वेद, सामवेद और अथर्ववेद। जिस वेद में ऋचाओं का संकलन है उसे ऋग्वेद कहा गया है। ये ही मंत्र जब गाए जाते हैं तब उन्हें 'साम' कहा जाता है और 'सामों का संकलन ‘सामवेद' कहलाता है। गद्य-प्रधान वेद को ‘यजुर्वेद' जो यज्ञों के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है। स्तवन, गायन और यजन इन तीन प्रमुख विषयों के कारण क्रमशः ऋग्वेद, सामवेद तथा यजुर्वेद का विभाजन किया गया। ये संयुक्त रूप से वेदत्रयी कहलाते हैं। जिन मंत्रों का संग्रह अथर्व ऋषि ने किया वे अथर्ववेद के नाम से जाने गए। ऋग्वेद सबसे अधिक महत्त्वपूर्ण तथा विशाल है। इसके मंत्रों में 'गायत्री मंत्र' व्यापक रूप से जाना जाता है- “ ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्।”

पुराण ‘पुराण' का अर्थ है अत्यंत प्राचीन या पुराना। पुराण हिन्दुओं के पवित्र धार्मिक ग्रंथों के भाग हैं। भारतीय जीवन-धारा में जिन ग्रंथों का महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थान है उनमें पुराण प्राचीन भक्ति-ग्रंथों के रूप में बहुत महत्त्वपूर्ण माने जाते हैं। ये भारतीय संस्कृति के प्राण हैं। पुराणों में ऋषि चिंतन का व्यावहारिक निचोड़ है तथा भारतीय जीवन शैली का आधार है। जीवन का कोई भी पक्ष इससे अछूता नहीं है। जिज्ञासुओं के सभी प्रश्नों के उत्तर पुराणों में हैं। इसमें लोक कथाओं, धार्मिक मान्यताओं, कहानियों और देवी-देवताओं की वंशावली का संकलन है। मूलतः इसकी रचना संस्कृत भाषा में हुई। बाद में विभिन्न क्षेत्रीय भाषाओं में इसका अनुवाद किया गया, जिसकी शैली महाभारत और रामचरितमानस की तरह काव्यात्मक है। पुराणों की यात्रा पीढ़ी दर पीढ़ी मौखिक रूप में ही चलती रही। काफ़ी समय के बाद इसे लिपिबद्ध किया गया। पुराणों के रचना काल के विषय में मतभेद है। कुछ लोगों का मानना है कि पुराणों की रचना 350 से 1500 ई० में हुई, तो कुछ इसे 3200 से 3100 ई० पू० की रचना मानते हैं। पुराणों के दो भाग हैं— महापुराण और उपपुराण। इनमें से प्रत्येक में 18 आख्यान हैं।
