Where COTS Falls Short
Consumer and industrial panels are designed for benign conditions. In defense service they face -40 degree cold starts, desert heat, sustained vibration, shock, humidity, altitude, and dense electromagnetic environments per MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461, conditions no consumer datasheet contemplates. Sunlight readability, gloved operation, and night vision (NVIS) compatibility are absent from COTS hardware, and its short commercial lifecycle guarantees obsolescence long before the platform retires.
What Rugged Buys You
Purpose-built rugged displays are engineered and qualified for the actual mission environment: optically bonded stacks for sunlight and vibration, sealed and EMI-shielded enclosures, wide-temperature operation, NVIS-filtered illumination, and controlled bills of materials that rugged display manufacturers can support for decades. Fewer field failures, no forced redesigns, and stable certification typically make the rugged path cheaper over the program's life, despite the higher unit price.
A Practical Rule
If a display failure merely inconveniences a user, COTS may suffice. If it degrades a mission or endangers a crew, ruggedization is not optional.
