Skill Choice: Normal EK vs. Massacre
Normal Ethereal Knives for Bosses
For boss fights, especially uber bosses or any hard single-target encounters, normal Ethereal Knives is recommended. It deals significantly more damage against single targets and is more comfortable for bossing. Use normal EK when you need maximum damage output.
Ethereal Knives of the Massacre for Mapping
For map clearing and any content except very tanky targets, Ethereal Knives of the Massacre is superior. It hits all around you, making clearing much easier and faster. The damage is lower, but the coverage and clear speed make it the better choice for mapping.
You can easily swap between both skills depending on the content. Most players run Massacre for general mapping and swap to normal EK for uber bosses and other hard targets. This is a personal preference, and you can use either skill for any content.
Svalinn Setup and Trigger Mechanics
Trigger on Block Setup
The Svalinn shield triggers socketed elemental spells on block with a 0.25 second cooldown. This allows you to trigger additional skills automatically, including curses. However, waiting for a boss to hit you before applying curses is uncomfortable, especially against ubers.
Recommended Curse Setup
Instead of placing curses in Svalinn, use Arcane Brand with Flammability and Elemental Weakness in your wand. This allows you to apply curses immediately without waiting for a block. If you prefer fewer buttons and want to remove Arcane Brand completely, you can move the curses into Svalinn.
Other Skills in Svalinn
Place Flame Surge in Svalinn for additional damage. Use non-elemental skills like Shield Charge and Herald of Agony in the remaining slots to avoid triggering additional elemental spells unnecessarily.
Golem and Culling Strike Trick
Culling Strike Support
You can add culling strike to your build by linking Culling Strike Support to your Summon Flame Golem. The golem's damage will cull enemies when it hits them, providing comfortable single-target damage even if the golem does not hit often.
Golem Selection
Summon Flame Golem is recommended for this setup. It provides damage and works well with the culling strike link. Other golems are also viable depending on your preferences.
Herald of Agony vs. Flesh and Stone
Herald of Agony for Damage
Use Herald of Agony to maximize damage. It is one of the best damage options for this build. This is recommended if you want the highest possible damage output.
Flesh and Stone for Survivability
If you want more tankiness and are not fully comfortable relying on Svalinn, replace Herald of Agony with Flesh and Stone in sand stance. This improves survivability and protects against one-shots. This is especially useful if you are not playing hardcore and want a more comfortable playstyle.
Servant of Decay vs. Forbidden Coming Calamity
Damage Comparison
Forbidden Coming Calamity provides approximately 12–13% additional damage compared to Servant of Decay. This is a solid damage increase for the build.
Survivability Comparison
Servant of Decay gives 6% of damage from hits taken from void spawn life before void spawn life. With four void spawns, this provides 24% additional survivability. This significantly protects against one-shots and makes gameplay more comfortable.
Recommendation
Servant of Decay is recommended for most players because the 24% survivability outweighs the damage loss, especially since the build is already dot capped. For the corruption on Servant of Decay, increased damage or +1 level of gems are both solid options.
Gear and Itemization
Helmet Crafting
In the uber endgame setup, move Ethereal Knives or Massacre into your helmet. Link it with Inspiration, Cruelty, and Swift Affliction. A helmet with +4 to level of projectile skills, +4 to level of socketed gems, and burning damage is ideal. A crafting video is available in the description.
Body Armor Setup
Place Enlighten in your body armor together with Heralds of Ice, Purity, Thunder, Malevolence, and Herald of Ash. This aura setup maximizes your damage.
Ring and Belt
Polaric Devastation remains the best ring option. A corruption with damage multiplier is available for 50+ divines but is not recommended for most players. Headhunter is recommended for mapping; even a basic uncorrupted version significantly improves clear capabilities. Svalinn and Grace of the Goddess remain core items.
Boots and Gloves
For boots, use chance to avoid being shocked as an implicit (40%) and as a suffix. This allows you to drop Tempest Shield completely. A Storm Shroud jewel can provide avoidance for other elemental ailments. For gloves, prioritize resistances and ignites deal damage faster.
Flasks
Bottled Faith provides 10% increased damage taken to
cheap Path of exile currency enemies on consecrated ground. It activates automatically when close to bosses due to the enchantment modifier. Atziri's Promise and Cinderswallow Urn provide regeneration, recovery, and damage. A divine life flask with immunity to corrupted blood and instant recovery is recommended for fast healing.
