Hit an innocent bystander, however, and both of you die—handing the victory to the Murderer. The pressure is immense, but with the right approach, you can turn that pressure into dominance.

Understand Your Role: Detective First, Gunman Second

Many beginners make the mistake of immediately looking for someone to shoot the moment they become the Sheriff. To excel in this role, you must stop thinking like a gunman and start thinking like a detective. The gun is merely the final step; the real game lies in reading people.

Most players follow highly predictable behavioral patterns, and this is especially true for the Murderer. Your primary mission isn't just to find someone to shoot, but to confirm the target is indeed the Murderer before pulling the trigger.

Spotting the Murderer: Five Key Behavioral Clues

The biggest difference between a pro and an average player is the ability to identify the Murderer before they strike. Here are some identification techniques to keep in mind:

1. Unnatural movement patterns: Unlike Innocents, who wander aimlessly, collect coins, and run around, a Murderer moves with clear intent—loitering around corners, tailing other players, or heading straight for a specific area.

2. Staying near the crowd but not in it: Murderers want to avoid witnesses while staying close enough to find targets. They often hover near the group without fully blending in, maintaining a distance that allows them to strike quickly.

3. Sudden camera shifts or quick turns: If a player suddenly snaps their view toward a lone player, they are likely locking onto a target and preparing to strike.

4. Deliberate disguise movements: Some Murderers try to blend in by jumping or using serpentine movement patterns to mimic the behavior of an ordinary Innocent.

5. Avoiding coins: Most Innocents spend the early game collecting coins. If a player deliberately avoids coin paths, they are likely biding their time, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Practical Strategy: A Guide from Start to Finish

The Opening Phase: Conceal Your Identity and Observe

Never reveal your gun right at the start. Exposing your identity too early makes you the Killer's primary target. Keep your weapon holstered and pretend to be an ordinary Innocent. Choose a good vantage point—head to an open area where many players congregate. However, avoid standing right in the middle of the crowd; keep a few paces away so you can observe everyone without being caught in the crossfire or ambushed during the chaos.

The Observation Phase: Engage Both Eyes and Ears

Turn on the sound and wear headphones. The Killer makes a distinctive sound when using their knife. If you hear a suspicious noise, immediately heighten your alertness and prepare to aim. Keep your field of view wide to track the movements of multiple players rather than fixating on just one person.

If you see a suspicious player moving toward a narrow corridor where two Innocents are located, you don't need to wait for the knife to come out—you already know what's about to happen. Aim and position yourself in advance.

The Pursuit and Engagement Phase: A Precise Shot

When being chased, do not run in a straight line; use obstacles to block the Killer's path and constantly reposition yourself to find a better shooting angle. Circle-strafing is an effective way to dodge knife attacks.

Only fire when you are certain the other person is the Killer. Witnessing a murder is the perfect moment to shoot. If you only have suspicions but no concrete evidence, continue observing rather than taking the risk.

Recovery After Being Killed

If you are unfortunate enough to be killed by the Killer, your gun will drop to the ground. Any Innocent can pick it up to become the Hero and continue the mission to eliminate the Killer. Even after you fall, your contribution isn't over—tell your teammates the gun's location via chat to help them carry on the fight.
