Console players have gone the last 20 years without being able to enjoy the SpellForce games on their machines… Well, officially anyway. But now those days are over with a remaster of SpellForce 3 – dubbed Reforced – making its way to current gen and last gen machines. This is a perfect time to introduce the series to console players, too, as SpellForce 3 is a prequel of sorts to the other games. SpellForce features an interesting mix of real time strategy and fantasy RPG elements to make what proves to be a peculiar yet mostly well-handled concoction.
Taken altogether, the mash of styles might feel immediately daunting to newcomers, but the tutorial system does a great job of breaking down the individual elements. The campaign follows the fate of Tahar, a child of fate introduced during the prologue section. In the early hours you play as Sentenza Noria, a legendary general voiced by the excellent Doug Cockle. Tahar, however, is player created.
If anything, Spellforce III often deviates quite far from its RTS roots. Some chapters saw me explore underground caverns and lost cities with my heroes while equipping new gear and carefully pulling off attacks instead of managing an empire, building an army and going to war. I would say that this pace in Spellforce III, and how the game manages to deliver so many different genres at once, makes it incredibly unique. In fact, there’s really nothing else like it out there. You either get your RPG or your RTS and these games never merge the two into one package. Spellforce III masters this.
More importantly though, it does justice to both gameplay philosophies well enough despite perhaps sacrificing a bit of depth in both areas in order to pull them together in this way. There aren’t a ton of abilities to master, nor are there very many ways to use them like in most RPGs of today. Similarly, there aren’t a lot of subroutines to assign to party members or much of a way to side-step the monotony of repetition and busywork that other, more singularly focused RTS games have iterated upon. So while the blend of its ideas are balanced well, each side of the experience does pay a price for that.
Spellforce 3: Reforced brings with it the two expansions which add to the story and, on PC, added quality of life improvements which you won’t necessarily spot if this is your first time with the game. More importantly though, it adds the Journey Mode, a completely different way to experience the core gameplay without sacrificing the grand scale.
Outside of the oversized hud and complete lack of any visual settings, Spellforce III: Reforced works very well with a controller. You navigate around with the analogue stick that acts as the mouse cursor. However, trigger menus also go a long way here to interact with menus and actions that you would usually have to click on with a mouse. This makes pulling off attacks and selecting unit groups a breeze. In combat, I just held down the R2 trigger and used the radial dial to select an attack or ability for my hero to perform.
Spellforce 3: Reforced is a good-looking game on PS5 though. The character models are detailed, and the world maintains a compelling and believable atmosphere. The majority of the voice-acting is on point, which makes the narrative work all the better. If anything, the biggest barrier to entry will likely be learning the controls. RTS games on a controller often feel fiddly, and this is no exception. Once you’re passed that though, it’s a well-made adventure that’s unlike anything else you can play on console.
