The SGOT Test, also known as the Serum Glutamic-Oxaloacetic Transaminase test or AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase) test, is a blood test that helps assess the health of your liver and heart. SGOT is an enzyme found in various tissues, primarily the liver, heart, muscles, and kidneys. When these organs are damaged, SGOT levels in the blood tend to rise. This test is often part of a Liver Function Test (LFT) panel and is commonly used to detect conditions like hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, heart attacks, or muscle injuries. By measuring SGOT levels, doctors can better understand the extent of organ damage and determine the appropriate course of treatment or further testing.
